The song is out now. I want to say something about what it is, because I think the title requires explanation rather than allowing the usual mysterious ambiguity that single titles sometimes perform.
The black sun is a specific thing. It is what happens to a source of authority when it has burned through its actual fuel, which is legitimacy, the genuine consent of the people over whom it operates, and is now running on the alternative fuel of compulsion alone. The light it produces is cold and it does not illuminate. It commands but it cannot persuade. It is still producing effects, still governing behavior, still shaping what people are allowed to do and say and think, but the mechanism has changed from illumination to enforcement.
I have watched this happen to every major authority structure I have observed across five centuries. The Church in the period of the Inquisition. The Ottoman courts in their decline. The 20th century ideological systems at the points when their utopian promises became untenable. The specific mechanism of the transition from illumination to enforcement is different in each case. The direction of travel is always the same.
Black Sun Rising is the track that maps this transition. The wheel repeats. History burns in mirrored streets. The pattern I have witnessed across five centuries, distilled into sound. The geometry is mapped. The choice of what to do with the map: that remains yours. The album arrives May 22.
